Simplify Your Holiday Decorating

It’s that time of year when we all start getting out the holiday decor! We all love it, but it can definitely get overwhelming if we have too much stuff or try to accomplish more than we have time for.

The spirit of the holiday season is to celebrate and spend time with family, right? Keep that in mind when decorating for the holiday, and follow these simple tips for managing your holiday decor so you can relax and enjoy it!  

1. Start decorating as early as you can.
One of the reasons we get overwhelmed by the holidays is we try to cram too much activity and expectation into a short window of time. I’ve found that when I start decorating a bit early and only attempt a little bit at a time, I enjoy the season much more. I can do as much as I want or have time for, but I fully enjoy decorating each area of my home and call it done whenever I run out of time or it ceases to be fun.  


2. Embrace simplicity.
This is a beautiful season, and one of the most fun components is that our homes can reflect our decorative holiday traditions. But at the same time, our lives are busier than ever. If we don’t enjoy the activity of decorating itself, it is time to reevaluate. You may have three or four sets of holiday dishes. You might be storing ten or twenty boxes of little Christmas houses or snowmen figurines or lights that you put up every year without fail. Those decorations may be part of your family’s tradition and the stuff of many happy memories. But, ask yourself if you actually want to put them all up this year. Do you have the time or help to get it all done? If you do, go for it! But if you feel overwhelmed at the thought, maybe just set up a few or give yourself permission to not use them this year. Traditions are wonderful as long as you are still enjoying them!  


3. Clear surfaces before you begin.
Every year before I start my holiday decorating, I clear the surfaces in the areas I plan to decorate. The mix of usual decor and holiday decor is just too much and can feel cluttered. In order to fully enjoy the festive items I want to use, I take as much away as I can before displaying anything new. As I unpack a holiday decor box, I put away the everyday items. Then, when it is time to put away the holiday decorations, I can bring back my year-round favorites.
 

4. Give some away.
Every year I seem to use less and less of my Christmas decor. If you have excess items you no longer use, consider giving them away to a family who has nothing. There are many people in need who would be grateful for decorations you don’t use. As you unpack each box, start a new box for what you can give away. Then call a local church or social services organization to find a family to donate it to, or simply take it to a Goodwill store or drop-off site. You’ll feel so much more organized for next year and have less to store.

Undeniably one of the tiniest furnishing items in a home and a quick pick+me+ up option any day, the throw pillow has come to stay.

And just as in about every furnishing detail,...there is a style to arranging the throw pillows to achieve maximum visual impact as well as seating comfort for you & your guests.

The first rule about anything is functionality, it may be good to look at but does it do what it is supposed to do?

This is the first test your throw pillow must pass.

You know, we creative people get carried away by the muse of the moment & sometimes we design and create for design sake, (we have egos too u know!)

So, much as the pieces are wow to look at, do they in anyway add to your sitting comfort?

Next is durability: What are your pillows made from? Can it withstand the handling (cuddling) & squeezing that pillows are normally subjected to? We do not want to spook any allergies now do we?

If the pillow has some decorative embellishments, how easy will it be to replace, should they accidentally fall off?

Finally, arrangement matters: Throw pillows are meant to compliment the sofas and general decor in the space they are being used in, be it the living room, bedroom etc

The most common concept or style of throw pillow arrangement is the 2-2-1 ratio. It's a pretty straightforward concept that accomplishes spectacular results. 

All you have to do is put two square pillows of one size (say a 22'' or 24'')and pattern on both ends of the sofa, then, add two smaller pillows (say a 16'' or 18'') in a different pattern next to them and finally finish the look with one cheerful rectangular pillow in the middle of them all and voila, you have added the oomph to your space. 

Other things you could do to create the perfect pillow arrangement for your home include:

Mix & Match Fabrics: Avoid using the same fabric for the sofa and throw pillow fabrics. Limit patterned fabrics to one set of pillows per sofa. Layer colors, vary prints with solids, and mix textures to achieve great visual effects. 

Start from the Outside: Select a matching pair of pillows that are either 22 or 24 inches square to place on the far right and left. Work your way to the center with a set of slightly smaller square pillows. 

Throw in an Odd Shape: What is the point of accessorizing your sofa if the whole thing comes out feeling too symmetrical, to avoid this, vary the pillow sizes, include a smaller, rectangular pillow made from a third fabric that's different but coordinates well with sofa and other items in the space. 

Fill & Fluff Them Right: This is the secret to great looking pillows. Use fiber fillings, they are better than polyester fillings, they allow the pillows to fluff after use. Fiber fillings allows you give the pillows the shape you desire, making them appear more comfortable and better looking but the best remains down filling; pricey but worth it.  

So, now you know the secrets of the picture perfect throw pillow arrangements that designers come up with so effortlessly. No more wishing you could get your house to look like the set you saw in the last interior magazine you checked out, you can now do it like a pro!

Define your style

This edition, we’ll take a look at another element in interior design known as style. This element plays a huge role in the interior designers’ ability to interprete the space to suit its proposed occupants. Recall, that the architect met the owner first and got a brief of what they need, he then went and turned these word descriptions of his client’s dream home into a drawing, which the builder now interpretes into the building that the interior designer has been commissioned to style .Pray tell me, at what point did styling come into play in this structure?

Usually, between the architect (conception) and the builder (Execution), design alterations would have occurred, some deliberately, others outright flaws. However, this is what the designer now has to work with to achieve a well appointed living space or work space. Never mind that the architect and builder thought they  were building a residential house .Well, Mr. Lagbaja has just bought it and hired XYZ interiors to turn it into an open plan office ! Or the design of the house is very contemporary yet you get this desire to furnish it in a Victorian Style.  After one such commission, I coined the phrase VICTORIAN CONTEMP! But I digress.

Style in interior decoration is akin to style in fashion, Depending on your body type (weight, height, shape, colour, occasion etc), not all dress styles will fit you. Same thing goes for houses, bet you’ve never thought of a house as having any of the attributes listed above.

When doing up a house, ideally, every fixture must have a reason for being and should function accordingly.  For instance, why incorporate a cathedral style window in your house and then go ahead to cover it with fabric?  A window that tall is to let in light so, why the cover?  

There are quite a few easily recognizable styles in interior decorating namely classic style, global style, traditional style, contemporary style, country style, retro style, romantic style, minimalist style, etc

Each style has some features that stand it out e.g. the overall look, the key colours, the window dressing, the floors, the furniture, the soft furnishing and fabrics, texture and patterns of fittings and fixtures, etc  All these must be strictly adhered to, in creating a style for a home.

This is why it is important to define your style ab –initio. Find out what appeals to you and why, match the style with the way you live your life currently before you proceed , Why create a formal room in your house when you don’t do any entertaining, much like installing a pool in your home when no member of your family can swim or plans to learn. In my opinion, a lot of people are lazy when it comes to defining their style; they tend to leave it to the designers. This shouldn’t be so.

Others do not believe that their individual styles can be realized and would not even try. This also is not right.

So, go ahead and state your style upfront. Remember, you are the one living in the house and the house should suit you! Do not encourage designers to do one- size- fits- all houses for you.

Colors for living.

Welcome to my world!

When furnishing a space, several elements must interact in that space to bring about harmony, please and benefit its occupiers. These elements include but are not limited to patterns, textures, styles, etc, but the most impacting is color. For instance, if the fabric choice is right and the color (hue) is wrong, you’ll get a wrong finish. There is a difference between red and burgundy and depending on the intensity or otherwise, it can either enhance or distort your space.

Yes, colors in the home are only surface decoration but they play an important role. Get the colors right and the house is looking glam, get it wrong and the house looks sick, noisy or weird.

Everything has a color that we can describe, so we need to know the makeup of a preferred color and how to best use it to our advantage when we are creating home interiors (and indeed all living spaces).

Did you know that you can use color to make a small space bigger, a big space smaller? Did you know that you can use color to make a space appear higher than it is or vice versa? Did you know that you can get hungry at the sight of certain colors?

I could go on and on but the fact is that it is widely believed that color has an important psychological impact on mood, well being, energy and motivation. Maybe now you can understand why you are unable to sleep in some rooms or why you feel happy each time you are in a particular place.

I loved to go to a particular jazz bar and I soon realized that apart from the nice music, the colors in the space energized me and always left me feeling so  alive.

Some colors make it difficult for the body to relax into sleep mode, while some colors make you go out like a light. So what colors do you have in your homes? Why should all your rooms be painted in the same shade of cream? How many conflicting colors are in your sitting room area? When last did you do a color audit?

Before applying color to any space in your home in whatever form, as wall paint, wall paper,sofa color, accessories like lamps and light fittings, curtains, rugs, bedding, etc, give a careful consideration to what the space will be used for. 

There is no point putting electric green color in the room where you want to sleep, it might make sleep difficult. You can have green alright but look to the cool hues. And this holds true whether you are talking duvets, sofas or blinds.

A proper understanding of color (known in professional circle as Color Theory) is a vital component of interior design and decoration and it is one of the secrets designers use to achieve balance, aesthetics and harmony in a space.

So, whatever size your space is, it is important to coordinate colour. Match or contrast them but please do not exceed three color tones in a given space.
