10 Tips for Decorating the Anteroom

The anteroom is a large entrance, reception room, or waiting area. It is usually the first place visitors enter before entering into the main house, or building. Your anteroom should not only be welcoming, it should also blend with the rest of your décor.

Have you been wondering what to do with that space? Ever asked yourself what you can do to make it an extension and an expression of who you are? These tips will help you create the perfect atmosphere and ambiance for your anteroom. Here we go!

·         Choose Colour Scheme
Choose your colour scheme carefully, consider what you want visitors to feel when stepping into your space – should it be warmth, love, peace, joy, affluence, etc?

·         Lighting
Does the anteroom have sufficient lighting? If there is sufficient light in the anteroom, you can paint a warm colour like terracotta or forest green to take advantage of the light. If there is no light you can paint colours that will work well with artificial lighting which you will install.

·         Furniture
Furniture for the anteroom must be durable and sturdy, able to withstand wear and tear since it is one of the most frequently used rooms in the house.

·         Size
Take the size of the anteroom into consideration. Anterooms are usually smaller than the other rooms in the house. It is easier to make the mistake of overcrowding your anteroom with furniture. Be sure to create an atmosphere of warmth and coziness if your space is small.

·         Don’t use sofas
Do not put sofas in your anteroom; it formalizes a room that is supposed to be airy, welcoming and embracing. Try occasional seats, ones with quirk so that they stand out; make use of wrought iron, wood or rattan finishes depending on your décor scheme.

·         Install durable flooring
Install durable flooring that can withstand the pressure of constant footsteps traffic in the anteroom.

·         Mix Fabric
Mix and match bold fabrics to create a stunning effect.

·         Decorate the walls
Decorate the walls of the anteroom with irregular shaped pieces of art, mirrors and mementos from your life’s journey.

·         Avoid cluttering
Avoid cluttering the anteroom with too many items like center table, bar etc; these defeat the purpose of the anteroom which is a momentary reception area.
