Want An Amazing Home? Then Pay Attention To The Details.

One question we ask our clients is about the functionality of particular spaces in their home. It is very important the interior designer understand how a particular room will be used else it may prove difficult to dress it appropriately for the occupants/end users.

For example, depending on where the rooms are facing (east, west, north or south) and also what time of the day both spaces will be used, we can generally assume that a dining room may require a brighter hue, than a bedroom right???

This is generally the rule but I’ve seen a few occasional exceptions too!

Where the bedrooms to the front had too much light that we had to darken them while the dining to the back needed additional artificial lights to buzz.

Now, we know from my previous articles that color makes your space pop and come alive; that is if you get it right; get it wrong and you will have a “sick” house where nothing seems to be in harmony with any other thing.

The trick is to decide on a holding color and then work several shades up and down the tone ladder of that same color e.g if your desire is to create a bright house, use a bolder palette throughout the rest of your house, but tone down the same color before taking it into your bedroom. Tomato red can be to toned down to Burgundy; Orange can be toned to Peach or even Apricot before working it into the bedroom scheme.

This sort of harmonization leaves you with a 3 dimensional house as opposed to a flat same color space and also allows you to enjoy your chosen color palette to the fullest while accessorizing your space.

I'd also like to point out at this point that there are other options available to make a space bold without having to put so much weight on just a paint colour.

  • You could install a boldly-patterned upholstered headboard
  • You can add some drama and impact using big prints/ varying textures etc
  • You can buy a pair of oversized occasional seats
  • Or even panel your walls

As with any space, it's often the detailing that makes it amazing!

So, spend some time thinking about what you want your space to be, the various uses you are likely to put particular rooms to from a day and night point of view and be absolutely clear in your mind about this then communicate it to your interior designer who will in turn recreate your desired space for you.

Home they say is where the heart is, you owe yourself to ensure that you are in love with yours…always.

Till I come your way again, give your home some thought, you are often judged by how it looks.

AND THE COLOUR OF THE YEAR IS .....

TEAL!!!

The first recorded use of Teal as a color name in English was in 1917 and now it is back to dominate 2014.

Recall my telling you earlier that 2014 IS ALL ABOUT RENAISSANCE... refulgence & reviviscence.

.....that’s right; you first heard it from us.

Teal is a deep blue-green color; a dark cyan. Teal got its name from the colored area around the eyes of the common teal, a member of the duck family.

It is a low-saturated color, a bluish-green to dark medium color, similar to medium blue-green and dark cyan. It can be created by mixing green with blue into a white base, or deepened as needed with a little bit of black or grey color.

The complementary color of teal is coral.

Other colours that combine well with teal include:

  • Aqua
  • De York Green
  • Fuschia
  • Bahama Blue
  • Pacific Blue
  • Light Blue
  • Natural Grey

Aqua, De York Green and Fuschia

Bahama Blue, Pacific Blue, Light Blue and Natural Grey

So find yourself and the colour combination that works for you and enjoy Teal - our colour of the year.

Till I come your way again, live colours and be home proud!

Think You're Cut Out For Doing DeClutter? Take This Quiz

“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”- William Morris

I am compelled to write this article because I just came back from inspecting a home that has left me wondering at our tendency to hoard things for things sake?

As I took a tour of this home, I couldn't help feeling that I was in some kind of antique shop, NO PLACE WAS EXEMPT, every room was chock full. We literally had to be moving sofas filled with cloths to get around the windows to measure; little wonder the client told me that they needed an overhaul of the house. Everything from the cots her children slept in as babies to the last sofa they had in their old home before moving to this present house were all still in the house even the cars had their garage taken over by her many possessions and had to be parked outside as though on display!

They had little or no regards for the architectural design of the house, she had an “everything- I- own- must- fit- in” mentality, little wonder the house left her depressed as she confessed when commissioning us.

Why wouldn't it ? I mused to myself when every available space has been filled with some piece of something or the other. The house was cluttered in fact, over cluttered in my humble opinion.

Are you guilty of the same thing in your home? Take my quiz and find out if your home is clutter free or not!

  • Are you a hoarder? Hoarding every piece of item you have ever bought in your life or is your home clutter free like it is supposed to be?
  • Do you tiptoe around items in your home just to reach other items?
  • Are these items useful or just plain junk e.g broken chairs, 10 year old mattresses, 4 year old pillows, 6years old Persian rugs?
  • Do you find it difficult to clean because of the clutter in your home?
  • Do you find that you own more pieces of furniture than you ever get to use?
  • How is the air in your home, Fresh? Stale? Humid or outright putrid?
  • If you answered yes to more than 2 of my questions then, it is time to remove the clutter, and enjoy a tidy home once again.
Furniture gathers moisture from use (sweat from our bodies, saliva from our mouths as we drool in sleep, food particles rubbed on to a sofa over the years etc etc)and without constant cleaning and airing, you are unknowingly turning your home into an incubator for disease breeding which will in turn cause you a lot of dis-ease in the home.

De-cluttering a home makes it look better, bigger, airier and of course healthier for all who live in it. Once clutter free, it becomes easy to appreciate and enjoy the furniture and furnishing in your space.

Here are some strategies for getting started on your own space.

Start with the end in mind: Visualize what you would want each room to look like first (There is so much help available now) You can goggle images of sitting rooms for instance or even buy interior magazines, fall in love with a design that resonates with you then, armed with the picture, walk through your home as though you were an inspection officer and determine (& make a list of) what you want to keep, give away or maybe sell.

It is always advisable to choose pictures as close to your actual layout as possible as it makes it easier to fit your stuff.

Work a room at a time: They eye is a fearful organ and it will take one look at what needs to be done and send a message to your brain that it can’t be done and you may develop cold feet. My advice? Work a room at a time... start with the easiest from your point of view. Once one room is done and you can see and appreciate the work you have done, I bet you will be energised to do the same for the rest of the house.

Catalogue your books: Old books have a way of cluttering the house and smelling horrid, get rid of them or catalogue and shelve them away neatly where they can be properly ventilated. We are all guilty of this- hanging unto our kids books long after they have ceased to need them. I wonder why? Sentiments maybe but those books just get stale and stink up the house so we need to pack them up and send them to children who may need them to study or even to libraries if there is any around you if you don't have the space.

Clean out your closets and make sure they can close properly: This is a major culprit in the home, closets (wardrobes) and drawers bursting and brimming over with stuff that we have been hoarding over many years, rubber bands, old batteries, or old keys, school bags, old shoes and such like. Ridiculous items that we should have done away with long before now.
Clutter leads to a feeling of disorganization, which though we may think is a show of how much we own, is actually stealing our lives, time, and energy: A home is meant to be lived in and enjoyed, set the tone now and start the decluttering process

Till I come your way again, live fully alive and be home proud!

Welcome to 2014!

collage of rosemary soft furnishing pictures
Dear All

Welcome to 2014!
The year of “where-did-you-get-that-piece”?
I’m super thrilled to be writing you this note this year.
My excitement stems from the fact that I followed trends on fashion and decor all through the holiday season... on the runways, the streets, in chic interiors... and I feel a certain excitement about where this year will lead us design wise.
Move over white walls. This is the year to enliven your space with hints of bright colours.  This year, we'll be seeing rooms with a lot more drama and statement pieces of furniture!
So, just before you throw out that your grandfather’s sofa, have my team over to take a look and restore it for you. It’s back to vintage in 2014.
We also see a move away from heavy drapes to sheers, sheers and more sheers. I know..., who doesn’t want an airy 2014 filled with romance and all things silky and beautiful? Well, the place to start from are your windows... the eyes into your home. Make them brighter, less stiff, less masculine this year.
We also see increased emphasis on wall decorations. The days of the bare chested walls are over. Welcome art wall hangings. Thankfully, you don’t have to rob a bank to own an original painting.
2014 IS ALL ABOUT RENAISSANCE... refulgence & reviviscence.
Come on design-loving discerning people, let’s go for it. Who knows, we may just discover a thing or two about ourselves in the great year ahead.
My team & I are ready as always to help you be and remain home proud all through this year. So, when it is soft furnishing and interior design, your option is simple: Choose Rosemary’s... be home proud!
