Lighting Tips for Living Rooms [2]

Since living rooms are one of the first rooms you walk into, it sets the tone for the rest of the house, so lighting is important because of the affinity it creates. If lighting sets the tone, let’s consider other brilliant ideas for your living room.

Stylish chandeliers, ceiling lights, wall-mounted fixtures or portable lamps can provide the ambiance that casts a warm glow in your living room. It controls glare and provides the general illumination that makes the living room feel comfortable and inviting. Since this type of lighting affects the overall quality of light in the room and tends to be used the most, this is where you want to use your energy-efficient solutions.

When you want to create interest and add sparkle to your living room, table lamps, hanging pendants and chandeliers can provide the decorative light that adds coziness and intimacy, it personalizes your space.

When you want to read a book or need to write at the desk, good task lighting helps you get things done. This brighter light can be a floor lamp with a swinging arm next to a comfortable chair, or a directed light source over a desk. Portable table lamps allow for flexibility, these are not the lights you use all the time, they are only to be used when you are doing a task; like reading or writing.

Lighting Tips for Living Rooms [1]

House owners spend a lot of time and energy choosing sofas, drapes and other household collectibles but often forget about the importance of proper lighting. In the space where you watch television, read books, play games and entertain guests, lighting serves an important purpose in both the function and look of the room.

A good living room lighting plan uses different kinds of light, set at different heights, that work together to make the space warm and attractive.  Many years ago, halogens fixtures were not as common as we see them today, and LEDs are definitely one of the newest options. So take advantage of the newer and more energy efficient lighting solutions for residential use. You can go online or visit local lighting showrooms and learn about the new light sources now available. Let’s take a look at some popular lighting procedure and how they work in your living room.

When you want to highlight certain features in your living room, accent lighting is the way to go. Recessed, adjustable lights directed to points of interest or under-cabinet lighting in a display case that highlights selected objects are examples of accent lighting. Accent lighting adds a pleasing variation of brightness; drawing attention and putting more light on an architectural feature. For effectiveness, accent lighting needs to supply about five times as much as light on the focal point as the surrounding general light.

Planning Your Kitchen Design

The kitchen is a very important room in a house, that is where most meals are prepared. The kitchen may also serve as the meeting point for family breakfast and other light meals.

To plan a kitchen we need to start with establishing the parameters within which we have to work. This includes the actual space, the uses of that space and the budget.

There are four stages to planning a kitchen:
Defining the space. This involves measuring up and noting the position of the existing services, windows and doors. It also includes planning from the start with the architect on how you want the space laid out.

Designing the room’s layout. You need design the room’s layout in order to have the appliances, work tops and cupboards where you want them.

Confirming the layout and the services. You need to confirm the layout and the services that are required. At this point, lighting should be factored into your plan. For example, apart from the centre main lights you may want lights hanging in specific places like over the cooker or over some work tops.

Confirming the finishes. You need to confirm the finishes that are required for the bench tops, the exterior of the cabinetry and the interior of the cabinetry, the flooring, the walls, ceiling and window treatments.

The following is intended to help you with the actual kitchen planning, but they are only suggestions and will not be practical in all situations, you will often have to compromise. The golden rule is – keep it simple – and remember that the kitchen is one of the main selling points for a house.

For years now kitchen designers have used a simplistic method of a triangle to connect the three main work spaces within a kitchen.

The main working zones in the kitchen are generally recognized as being – food preparation, cooking and serving, and final washing up. Each activity zone needs to include the work top(s) and appliances required for that activity; also the zone will require the storage space for the utensils, ingredients etc. required for it.

In addition to the three zones, it is important to arrange the appliances and work tops in the correct order i.e. work top - appliance – work top. A work triangle is formed between the three zones.

Putting Finishing Touches to Your Interior Decor

Finishing touches are important in decoration; they are like the icing on the cake. When it comes to finishes touches, less is better because the aim is to cap the decoration and tie them together not to have a fresh collection.

Here are a few tips on how to create finishes:

1. Artwork - paintings or prints. Select pictures or prints that relate to your theme or style, make sure they incorporate colors from your color scheme. They can be used to highlight your colors or just to create a texture to the wall in similar color tonings.  If you have a lot of paintings, it is better to group them together to create "one" picture, rather than spread them one by one across the wall.

2. Artwork - sculpture. Sculpture is a great way to create a focal point in a room, find a god spot to display it and make sure you have a way of highlighting it with light.

3. Vases - Flowers, fresh or artificial. These are a great way to soften a look. Fresh flowers are great because you can always create a new look depending on the type of flowers and the way they are arranged. For example wild flowers grouped suggest randomness, tulips on their own suggest simplicity, red roses on center stage suggest passion, spring flowers evoke cheerfulness to a room at the changing of a season, large white Asian lilies express opulence. To save time and money artificial flowers are a very good option today. Many of them look real that you can almost “perceive” their scent, until you have a closer inspection. Choose flowers that suit the style you have created.

4. Cushions - These are the greatest accessory, especially if you have children who will continuously scatter your well placed accessories. Cushions are great as you can further enhance the colors and fabrics that you have chosen. You can use the same fabric in a slightly different color way or the same colorway in a different design. Contrasting colors work well to brighten a scheme, or textured cushions in a monochromatic scheme. Cushions could come in different styles; fringes and tassels, buttons and beads etc.

5. Throws - these are a simple way to make a room feel more homely. They are great when you sit to watch the TV at night and you wrap the throw around your shoulders and snuggle. So they are useful as well as add color, texture and style to a room.

6. Tie backs, hold backs - curtain accessories, these really add a touch of class to your window treatments. You can choose from such a huge selection of materials which include silk, beads, embroided ropes etc.

7. Lamps – Lamps help to add finishing touch and create versatility in mood creation to your room. You have many options with lamp bases and shades to add color and texture to your room.

8. Coffee table books – This is an ultimate accessory. You can place books on trendy topics like fashion, politics, or other hot topics that will draw readers’ attention. This is a way of making people feel welcome in your home.

9. Ornaments - keep these to a minimum, as they are the fastest way to clutter, but the odd strategically placed ornament will definitely make your house look and feel like a home.

10. Mirrors - These are a simple way to make rooms look larger or bring in more light to a room via reflected light. You can choose from so many beautiful frames available.

All You Need to Know About Duvets [2]

There are two types of duvets: natural and synthetic Duvets filled with natural fillings such as duck feather, dawn and goose dawn are called natural duvets. They are usually imported, lighter and are able to trap more air than normal feather and so offer better sleeping insulation.

Synthetic duvets on the other hand are; hollowfibre, permafresh (anti-allergy) and spindawn.

Hollow fibre is a collection of fine siliconised polyester hollofibre which provides good comfort and warmth.

Permafresh, on the other hand, is a special fibre made from a blend of poly propylene fibre and polyester fibre. It provides built-in protection against bacteria and dust mites and remains intact after repeated washings.

Spawn dawn contains a blend of the finest microfibers giving superb softness and excellent insulation properties. The filling is fine and more thermally efficient so less is needed to achieve same warmth as the conventional duvet. It also weighs less and can be washed with a domestic washing machine.

There are two ways to make a duvet
·         Channeled or coverlet
·         Pocketed or quilted

A coverlet or channeled duvet prevents the filling from moving from side to side but allows it to move up and down the duvet. Therefore, if the sleeper feels warm, they can adjust the duvet by pushing the filling down to reduce the level of warmth. In contrast a quilted or pocketed duvet keeps the fillings fixed in pockets, hence the name. It makes the filling has less chance of moving up and down.

Decorating with Wicker Baskets

To decorate and manage your home, consider a convenient and attractive organizational solution like a wicker basket. These handy containers are a great way to arrange everything from flowers to laundry. When you are short on space, hanging baskets are a great solution. You just need to purchase a few inexpensive wicker type baskets and install them on your walls. Not only is this an easy project, it is a very cheap one and gives you a place to store things; like towels, washcloths, toiletries, and anything else that you need extra room for.

Baskets have been underused for a while now; they are only useful for stuffing used belongings. The beautiful thing is that you not only benefit from the function of these baskets, you also get to choose what kind of basket(s) to use. From selecting a color, texture, size, shape, there are loads of options, and stylish ones at that to consider.

Here are some great ideas for using baskets in your home.
Metal wall baskets in bathrooms take up no floor space in your bathroom, but still hold toiletries and essentials, such as white linens. These baskets maintain the clean and classic color scheme in their space while adding a bit of an industrial look and feel.

Woven baskets provide a lovely earthy and textural element to a laundry room which sometimes hosts large industrial-looking washers and dryers. Neutral and orderly, the baskets provide a neat-looking home for many oddly colored, shaped, and used items.

An entryway is a classic place for baskets; it is inherently a catch-all part of the house. These woven baskets are an excellent choice here because they fit perfectly underneath entry table.

Using wicker baskets could create a welcoming first impression, which is highly commendable because they stylishly hide away not-so-pleasant things that we don’t want visitors to see.

All You Need to Know About Duvets [1]

Duvets are basically body warmers made of fabrics. They come in various sizes, tog ratings, fillings, styles, textures, etc. depending on their manufacturer. It is important to have a good understanding of duvets in order to make an informed decision at the point of purchase.

Tog rating is a duvet’s level of warmth i.e. how well a duvet gives out warmth and regulates body temperature. It is not an indication of beauty, rather of functionality. Some duvets are just pretty, but they can’t keep out the cold effectively so, if you buy a duvet based on aesthetics alone, then you won’t gain the desired warmth, e.g. a duvet made from Arabian silk will be very pretty but may not insulate properly.

Below are suitable tog ratings:
4.5 tog - suitable for warm weather
10.5 tog - suitable for fine weather
12 - 13.5 tog - suitable for cold weather

It is very important to choose the right tog rate for your sleeping condition.

Sizes
There are various sizes of duvets as there are beds. Listed below are sizes and actual measurements to help you purchase the right size of duvet for your bed. Do not add the head board when measuring your bed.
Single Duvet   135cm* 200cm
Queen Duvet  200cm* 200cm
King Duvet     225cm* 220cm
Super King     260cm* 220cm
Pillow sham    74cm* 48cm

Unique Ceilings to Beautify Your Home

When most of us think about the ceiling of our homes, what comes to mind is that the ceiling should be white and flat. Despite all the amazing steps we have taken towards designing and decorating the rest of the house, a ceiling seems to be something that escapes our minds rather easily. Whether it is in the living room or the dining area, the kitchen or the bedroom, a splendid ceiling can give a room a unique, quirky and individual character that also leaves a lasting impression in the minds of those who step in. The perfect ceiling design varies for each room and each home and depending on the available space; there are numerous patterns and colors to choose from.

From tray ceiling to beam ceiling, cove ceiling to the highly popular drop ceiling, these beautiful ceiling inspirations give room for that exclusive and exceptional feel you are looking for. From providing a sleek and stylish modern alternative to offering the classic look by employing pendant lamps and chandeliers, an innovative ceiling design can do wonders to any existing room when combined with the proper lighting technique. Modern ceilings can do a whole lot more than just provide a plain white roof. With the amazing number of designs on offer and the way architects can play with both form and function, you can obviously include beautiful LED lighting units as part of an elaborate and exquisite roof design.

Simple white ceilings are awesome, but there are other ways to design them. If you presently have white ceilings, dare to be creative by painting the ceiling with cool colors or decorating it with wood boards or moldings. The best part about many of these amazing ceiling designs is that they blend in seamlessly with the remainder of the home and its chosen theme, while still stealing the spotlight in a modest fashion. A great ceiling complements the rest of the room, lifts its visual appeal and offers it a fresh new perspective that is both exquisite and aesthetic.

Using Fabrics for Soft Furnishing Accessories

Fabrics can be used for accessories to brighten up a tired colour scheme, or add some seasonal colour to a room. Cushions are the most popular accessories. Materials that have trended for cushions include fur, animal prints, silk and beads, sheer overlays, quilted, buttoned etc.

Cushions and throw pillows are a great way to add colour and texture to a room. You can use the same fabric on tie backs, or throws to balance the look. You can use the same fabric as the curtains but in a different colour, to add a new dimension to the room. Remember to use these patterns more than once in a room for a good visual appeal. You can also pick out a colour from the drapes and use that as your accent.

The most important thing to remember is that you are using fabric to add texture and softness to a room. It also adds colour and creativity to the scheme as well as enhancing the style that you have created.

Using fabrics in a room, either as window treatments or upholstery helps to absorb sound. For example, there will be no echo when the home theatre is turned on if you have soft furnishing in the room.

Using Fabrics for Upholstery

Using fabrics for upholstery requires some care and technicality. Some fabrics can be used for both window treatments and upholstery while most cannot.

Fabrics for upholstery should be durable able to withstand pressure, and abrasion from sitting. Check out the properties of the fabric before using it as your upholstery.

Furniture that are used frequently like the sofas, footstools etc require good quality material, while lower grade fabrics can be used for occasional chair or other furniture that are not often used.

Good fabrics for upholstery include wool, some wool blends, Dralon, leather and vinyl.

Using Fabrics Efficiently for Window Treatments

In the next couple of publications, we will consider how to use fabrics for window treatments, upholstery and accessories. It promises to be interesting and educative.

Fabrics can be put to many uses which include aesthetics, functional etc. Curtains are a functional use for fabric. Using fabrics for window treatment reduces drafts, keeps the room warm, blocks away noise to an extent, and it beautifies a room.

Fabric is also used for upholstery on chairs and sofas. This is not only functional, but has the added value of comfort and aesthetics.

Using fabrics for window treatment is a good choice which requires some practical considerations. Before choosing a fabric for window treatment, examine them well; check out the changes in tone, texture and highlights of the material as you swing the fabric from side to side. Also, hold it up upright to observe how it drapes. What is the weight like? Too heavy fabrics can weigh down a window, while too light fabric can make the room look bare.

In addition, check whether the fabric is colour fast or it will fade quickly. Synthetic fabrics tend to have better fade resistance and are not easily worn out by exposure to the sun unlike natural fabrics like silk, linen and wool.

Consider the suitable pattern for the room; fabrics with large patterns are suitable for large rooms because large patterns make the room look enclosed. On the other hand small patterns will look odd in a large room; they are better suited for smaller rooms.

If you want to create a monochromatic colour scheme and you require drapery, use a fabric that is one or two tones darker or lighter than the wall colour. This provides a break and a small amount of contrast for a monochromatic scheme. It is best to have some sort of texture when doing this style of scheme otherwise the room can look flat.

Choose carefully the type of heading you will use for drapes as this will affect how the fabric hangs and how the pattern is viewed. Sheers create a soft and romantic look at a window in contrast to velvet which exudes heavy luxury and warmth.

Distinctive Flooring Options [2]

Ceramic flooring: The many shapes, sizes, colors and textures of ceramic tile make it easy to create customized and exquisite patterns; and their cost varies widely. Ceramic tile is made from a mixture of clay and shale that is baked and hardened in a kiln. Dry pigments added to the mixture gives the tiles earthy tones that range from ocher to deep red. Be sure to purchase only tile that is rated for use on floors. Some ceramic floor tiles come with an anti-slip finish that provides excellent traction even when wet. Ceramic flooring tile comes as one of four basic types:
·
Glazed ceramic has a glasslike coating that gives the tile an unlimited variety of colors and textures and makes the material virtually maintenance-free.
·         Quarry tile is an unglazed ceramic tile that comes from pigments added to the clay mixture. Quarry tile has a slightly rough texture that provides better slip-resistance than glazed tile.
·
Porcelain tile is hard and durable; it is resistant to staining and is a good choice for exterior applications.
·
Terracotta is an unglazed tile with earthy colors and rustic appearance. It is not as durable as other tiles and must be sealed periodically to prevent staining.
·
Vinyl tiles are flexible and slightly soft underfoot; they come in an array of colors and patterns at relatively modest cost. Vinyl flooring has a wear layer on its upper surface that helps resist stains and scratches and you can expect good-quality vinyl to last 20 years.

Stone flooring: If you are looking for a little touch of luxury, stone floor tile provides quality, at a premium price. The ability of stone to resist moisture and staining depends on its hardness. Softer stones such as sandstone and limestone must be finished every few years with a stone sealer. Harder stones, such as granite and marble, should be sealed every four to five years. Honed and polished stone tile can be slippery when wet, so choose stone that has a textured, skid-resistant surface for kitchens and master bath applications.

Cork flooring: Cork has a warm, natural appearance and is comfortable underfoot. It has unusual grain patterns featuring whirls and speckles. It comes in tiles or planks with a laminate construction; it is either glued down or installed as a floating floor. Cork comes from the bark of a tree. The bark is harvested every eight to 10 years and is a sustainable material, meaning the tree is not destroyed but is allowed to regenerate new bark that can be harvested repeatedly.

Laminate flooring: come as planks or tiles. Most are floating floor systems, meaning they can be installed directly over old existing flooring without glue or nails; no tear-out is necessary. Laminate is a popular ‘do it yourself’ flooring, but it’s wise not to overestimate your skills because installing around corners and between door jambs takes patience and ingenuity. Laminate flooring offers an enormous variety of styles, colors and patterns, the top layer is a plastic coating applied over real wood.

Distinctive Flooring Options

Today’s choices in flooring are more varied than ever, considering the spectrum of styles, finishes and installation options. Production has become innovative, the raw materials used to create flooring types include; gin bottles, corn sugar, and the staves from old wine barrels. The benefactor here is the consumer, who gains from an astonishing array of choices that fit any lifestyle or budget. Be bold and creative in terms of mixing or matching your options within the available space.

Slate flooring: is a warm and interesting choice for interior flooring. Though it must be sealed, the material is resistant to fading, scratches and chemicals. The wide range of colour options from light tan to deep black make the tiles quite versatile.

Bamboo flooring: this increasingly popular foreign material is often mistaken for wood, although it is not a hardwood but a grass. Bamboo strands are glued together to form solid strips or engineered planks, just like hardwood. Bamboo is tough and durable. Because it comes from plants that are easy to grow and regenerate quickly, bamboo is considered a sustainable material and an environmentally friendly flooring choice.

Hardwood flooring: Hardwood flooring is acclaimed for its unrefined beauty and longevity. Its classic good looks blends with any decorative theme or design, and it’s an especially good choice to create visual room-to-room continuity for homes with open floor plans. The availability of exotic species of hardwoods varies with market conditions, and popular imported varieties include Brazilian cherry, purple heart, and African pedauk. One advantage of solid wood is that it can be refinished many times over its lifespan. To make sure the wood flooring you buy is authentic; you could use the expertise of a professional decorator.
