Colour in interior
decorating is a very wide and important topic which cannot be overemphasised.
We bring you a few tips on how to use colour well in decoration.
Determine the
style of your decoration and the colour scheme that is suitable for it. You can
get plenty of ideas from interior decorating magazines and online sources.
Start your scheme
with a colour which could be derived from any of the existing furniture or
other accessories in the room, e.g. a rug, furniture fabric etc. If you are
decorating from an architectural plan, it is better to start planning for
colour starting from the floor then to the upper parts.
Next, start
“layering” your colour using your colour scheme. Start with the largest areas,
floor, walls and ceiling.
After this bring
in other larger pieces of furniture one after the other. Balance the
decoration, avoid clamouring the same colour shades in one area; rather spread
the colour theme across the room such that it looks even to the eyes.
Mix pattern and
texture with your colour scheme to make the decoration more interesting.
Think in three
dimensions when you plan colour; dark curtains will make a room look enclosed. To
create a cozy intimate room use warm dark colours; to make the room look light
and airy, use pale, fresh, colours. Painting the ceiling white will give more
height to the room, while painting it in dark colours will lower the height of
the room.
Also, colours can
be used to reshape a room; for example you can make a rectangular room look
like square by painting the two shorter walls in a darker shade than the longer
walls. This will make the shorter walls appear longer and make the room look
more balanced.
Make sure that the
room you are working on is in harmony with the rest of the house.
Ensure that the
lighting of the room enhances your colour scheme. Poor or inappropriate
lighting will detract from the quality of your colour scheme.
