Interior Finishes
include floor, walls, ceilings, internal joinery and soft furnishings.
Before purchasing
products for finishes, you need to assess them based on the following metrics:
Durability
The products you
choose must be hardwearing able to withstand things like foot traffic, water
spillage, children’s activities and artistic flair, pets, furniture movement
etc. The product should be easy to maintain particularly for floors which will
require regular cleaning. Also the products should not be the type that can
easily be scratched, broken or prone to changing temperatures.
Health and Safety issues
The products must
be compatible with health and safety; they must not pose potential danger to
the health and safety of the inhabitants or users. For example, floor tiles for
kitchen, bathrooms must be the types that have friction; the floor tiles for
the other rooms should also not be too slippery. Finishes should not constitute
a fire hazard, or have sharp and hard edges.
Comfort and Aesthetics
The finishes
should blend into the overall design and pattern of the building. The finishes
should have aesthetic appeal, fit in with the entire colour scheme, pattern
and design of the space.
Finishes must also
be comfortable, soft, silky or fluffy, cool underfoot (as with tiles) as
required. For floors, walk on them, put samples on the floor and view them in
the natural light of your room. Stand on them in bare feet, feel the sensation
of the floor product on your feet.
Also, finishes
must conform to the acoustic and thermal insulation requirements of the local
building authority. For example, if a room in the house or building is intended
to be a private studio, it should be embellished with acoustics.
