Return of Ethnic Influence

The trend these days is a return to what we call Africaness. We bring you inspiring tips to help you develop creative patterns for your home.

As far back as 2004, Jeff Banks, a world known decorator predicted that the next big thing in interiors will be the return of ethnic influence; lots of rich textiles, carved wood furniture and tones of neutral earthy colours. Tourists from foreign countries tend to value our rich African heritage more than we do.

Thankfully, the drift is that we are returning to our roots. We feature rattan popularly called cane in Nigerian speak.

Rattan is extensively used for making furniture and baskets. When cut into sections, they can be used as wood to make furniture. Rattan has the ability to accept paint and absorbs it like wood hence its availability in various colours like silver, gold, bleached white, brown etc.

It can be made into many styles and furniture, they are very durable, easy and cheap to maintain.

Rattan chairs. They come in various designs as singles, doubles, lounges, easy chairs, high backs, garden chairs, cushioned or bare, and so on.  There are about six hundred species of palms native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australasia, that Rattan can be made from.

Rattan baskets. These are tall, elegant, imposing baskets, an improvement from the first baskets which were made from seaweed. Rattan is especially good for making baskets because of its spines. Rattan resembles bamboo, but is distinct because the stems are solid not hollow like the bamboo’s.

Rattan table mats and trays. Rattan tablemats are durable, good heat conductors; in addition they add beauty and style to your home. Rattan trays are also stylish, they can be used as trays permanently place on the table to hold teapots, cups, mugs, sugar and salt shakers or other small items.

At Rosemary’s we delight in transforming your home and office into a haven even with a limited budget. We also offer consultancy and advisory services on all aspects of interior decorating.
